Marko Nyberg is a Finnish composer and sound designer working across contemporary dance, theatre, film, television and recorded music. His work explores how sound and music shape the experience of a moment.

For Nyberg, composition begins with listening. With a background in classical music, he explores how simple sounds can carry complex meaning. He finds musical ideas in unexpected places: an old piano, snow underfoot, the particular resonance of an instrument. This approach, which he describes as sound hunting, informs his use of acoustic instruments, analogue electronics and digital sound synthesis.

His selected stage works include Black Sabbath – The Ballet for Birmingham Royal Ballet, for which he composed the first act and designed the sound for the full production, and Macbeth and Garden, created in collaboration with choreographer Tero Saarinen and Tero Saarinen Company.

Nyberg is the creative lead of El Camino Helsinki, the sound company he founded in 2008, and the founder of the cinematic indie band Husky Rescue. The band released four studio albums on the UK label Catskills, performed at festivals including Glastonbury, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, and had its music featured in television series including The Sopranos, Top Gear and Lovesick. Nyberg’s more recent screen credits include additional music for Apple TV+’s Silo.
